Day 1
Since our friend Kristen is in her last semester of college, and we never did get to see one of her volleyball games, my friend Miranda and I finally went to visit her and see one of her games!
Which meant a weekend road trip to Rhode Island, of course!
We left Friday, September 23 around noon, and we drove in six states before reaching our final destination: Pennsylvania (of course), New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts (no, we didn't get lost, the highway just literally goes into one and then back into the other).
We got there around 8:30 and it had since grown dark; thankfully, we still found the house and a place to park. After being introduced to her housemates and dropping off our stuff in her room, we hung out in the kitchen, eating some of the stromboli she had made and chatting about what was going on with all of us.
Day 2
Kristen left before we did, since she had to go to school earlier to get ready for the game, so we didn't have to rush - but we still were early leaving, so we got coffees at Dunkin Donuts [fun fact: about halfway through NY and all the way up north, all you'll see is Dunkin...in contrast to seeing several Starbucks per town here] and drove through a little bit of Bristol and a little bit of her college campus [that of Roger Williams University, that is]. Finally we headed up to Massachusetts for the volleyball game.
The game went well, and there were some good volleys; however, Kristen's team was clearly more skillful and won all three games in about a little over an hour. So yay, we saw her play a victory game!
When we had all returned back to her house, we got ready and left for some adventure time. Kristen drove us to Newport, where we drove down Bellevue Ave past all of the beautiful, historic mansions. We finally parked and joined many other walkers on the Cliff Walk along the shoreline. The whole thing is about 3.5 miles, but we didn't start at the very beginning; however, we still probably did about 6 miles down and back.
It was a beautiful walk! The further we went, the less people there were because it got to be more and more rocks until it was just rocks. I enjoyed climbing on them (Kristen and Miranda occasionally followed me, and occasionally groaned as I roamed about, especially Kristen, since my constant movement made it difficult for her to get pictures of me, haha!). The walk included two tunnels and a few other cool areas. At one point we stopped to help an older lady cross a rocky section, because she was obviously stuck, and yet people - including grown men! - just kept walking right by her without offering to help her. So we helped the poor lady across to the paved walkway. We had a fun time chatting, picking on each other, and taking pictures.
Finally we made our way back to the car and went to the Newport Creamery for supper, where our waiter, Justin, had a definite NYC accent (for example, he said "cawfee") and was very talkative, but nice. Kristen's early birthday present was that Miranda and I split the bill for her supper. Lastly, around 8:30 at night, we stopped for ice cream at Eskimo's, which has 300 flavors in hard or soft ice cream. Yum!
Back at her house, we warmed up in her room (it had gotten chilly as night fell) and watched Father of Lights for the second time and were ready to fall asleep.
Day 3
We got to sleep in that morning, and then Kristen made pancakes and we sat out on the little patio, with a view of the harbor and the 100-year-old bridge. We packed up our stuff and put it in the car before walking down to the end of her road onto a beach with lots of shells - including a whole bunch that still had things living in them. Then we walked down underneath the bridge. Lastly, we followed Kristen to Sip n' Dip for coffee and we sat outside and chatted some more before we reluctantly left to head back to PA. Soon after we left, Kristen sent a snap chat saying "Please come back, I miss my friends!"
Thankfully the drive back didn't take as long, since traffic wasn't nearly as bad. Overall, it was a fun trip.

I was in charge of photographing all of the state signs we passed - here's just a few!

One of the views from our winding shoreline walk - look at all those fancy mansions!
