Guatemala 2015 - August 9

No running that morning, it was our day of rest!  It was nice to sleep til 6:50!  Miranda and I did breakfast.

Church was indescribable - at least, to  many American Christians, indescribable in one way, while I mean it in another!  It was awesome and powerful, with a very heavy presence of God.  The Spirit was heavily at work in that place.  Worship was long, as usual, and it didn't take long before I could feel His Presence in that room - it didn't matter that I was singing in Spanish and didn't understand most of the words I was singing, because the Spirit was still there and I was moved by it.  (Just more evidence that it is not the music that moves hearts, but the Spirit that works through the music.)  People started falling over in the presence of God, and there were many deliverances - including Delmi.  Ryan pulled Miranda and Miranda pulled me and we went up thinking we were going to pray healing over her eyes, but it turned into a deliverance (thankfully, Sharon was also there, so she took care of the later stages of it after Ryan pulled us back and we went back to our seats).  it was quite an experience to see so much (when last year it was only, like, two people in the opposite corner from us), but I loved it.  The Spirit was there. It was what church is supposed to be.  Some of the men also prayed over some of our guys, which moved some of them to tears. During the last or second-to-last song (Great I Am, in Spanish: Aleluya, Santo Santo / Ponderoso gran Yo Soy / Quien es digno como nadie  / Ponderoso gran Yo Soy) I was half crying and half Holy Spirit laughing.  Then Julio preached a good sermon and at the end of church we (mostly Kyle) was hanging out with Kenani.  Then some of us (well, mostly just us teens) walked to the compound with Karen and her brother because we had a lot of extra passengers for the van.

Back at the compound we had a "little meeting" for Ryan to simply explain a bit what we saw in the service.  However, it turned into a major discussion (well, an argument on the end of some of them) and it got very tense - let's just say that some of them did not have the faith to believe that God moves like that and His Spirit is an integral part of moves of God - and I for one was glad to leave that room and go to lunch.

Lunch was across the road at the really good steak house with the Rodriguezes.  Miranda and I and Kyle had fun chatting with Linda.  Then back to the compound to chill for a little bit.

Then off to Gethsemani where most of them got out to go play with the youth group kids - Ryan, Miranda, Joann and I went to buy coffee for everyone.  It was a really good time.  We had great conversation with Joann, who is an amazing lady.  One of my favorite quotes by her is that some people "don't understand that there is a difference between interpretation and revelation."  She is so humble, too.  Back at the school the time for playing was almost up, so Miranda and I talked with Jodi.

Later, after supper and all that, the Rodriguezes came over for ice cream and to talk to the, uh, ones with questions about what happened in church and some other stuff.  Julio gave his testimony, which was awesome.  Then basically everyone left except our Akron group (and Colin and Derek) and Julio, Jodi, Deborah, Isaac, and Linda.  Ryan washed the three oldest kids' feet and prayed over them, and also Julio and Jodi.  Julio was sobbing, and when Ryan prayed over Isaac, he also sobbed.  Basically all of us were at least sniffling.  It was an amazing time.

Then we all hung out for a while and talked with Linda, and after she left Miranda and I were up in our room packing and talking.  We then did our devotions and went to bed with a very sad heart - we did not want to leave the next day.

California 2018: Open Heavens and San Francisco

Seven years of waiting. Seven years...and I finally was on my way to California. More specifically, I was finally going out to a Bethel conference in Redding, CA, by way of San Francisco. Along with my friend Miranda, we were ready for our short four-day adventure October 3-6. I couldn't believe that I could get to Guatemala faster then I could California. Seriously, what is up with that? (At least the way home was a 1/2 hour shorter than the US-Guate flight.) We arrived at San Francisco airport, got our rental car (a much fancier one than either of us owns ourselves), and set the GPS for La Quinta Inn and Suites, Redding, and started driving. The landscape along the highway fascinated me. Such dry, golden-brown hills with dark green trees that stood out like little black dots from a distance and looked out of place up close. When we got to a stretch of very flat land for a good hundred miles at least, varying between dusty dry grass and some sort of tree farms (were they al...

Guatemala 2018: Dirt Roads and 200 Cheeseburgers

It was a flawless blue-sky day as we drove out to Yalu once again, over two very bad dirt roads as we got closer to the village. Back at the school there for the third year, seeing the walls that we painted two different shades of blue two years ago, the youth did their skit once again. The kids really enjoyed doing Allelu Allelu with us, especially when they realized they should be trying to out-sing (yell!) the other half when it was their turn! Then, we played a crazy game of Sharks and Minnows with hundreds of excited children!! It was a crazy wave of little Guatemalans swarming us Americans. The kids watching the skit To shorten a long story, we had gotten a very late start in the morning and didn't have time to actually do physical labor for them, but we did see the location of where we at least left the supplies we had brought to build a chicken coop. It was a tiny little area where a family lives up along a hillside. It was the wife's idea to raise chic...
