Our weekend trip to Nürnberg began! Our parents brought all of us Americans to the train station in Altötting (most of our Germans did not want to be awake that morning and so did not go to see us off). The train rides were not so bad. We changed trains twice. On the second train, Miss Hall came by and gave Jake and I each a ticket - Jake's was for him and Nate, and mine was for me, K'yana, Kaylee, Allison and Cassandra. The three teachers all had five kids on their tickets, too...so I guess that meant that Jake and I were the more responsible, next-in-line adults. Which also meant that since the people on my ticket had to stay near me in case they came around to check tickets (which they don't always do in Germany), K'yana and Kaylee kept calling me "mom" as we got onto the third train.
And then...we finally got to Nürnberg! We walked from the train station, a whole line of us just following Frau. We stopped at one of the squares and got a tiny bit of time to walk around. And then, In English, I heard a guy singing Christian songs, so I went over to him and talked to him. He's from Germany, but when he sang he did not have an accent. He asked where we (Cassandra came with me) were from and if we were Christians (because I told him I loved the songs he was singing, and that they were the first Christian songs I'd heard in Germany). He asked if I'd heard about Awaking Europe, where in July all these people and bands would be coming to Germany (and Nürnberg), including Bill Johnson and Todd White! I so wanted to go back then!! That was the most uplifting and my favorite part of our day. As we had to walk away, he started singing "Holy Spirit."
At the next square we also got a little bit of time because Frau had to make dinner reservations for us. There was a market there, so we all walked around it and we found a cool stand with hand-crafted animal things and I got a squirrel and a hedgehog and Jake got two owls on a branch. They were so cute. Then we walked up to the castle/fortress that had been partially made into a youth hostel and got our room numbers and put our stuff in a room that locked and then we left again. When we started walking it was raining, so we were a long line of umbrellas down the sidewalk. We went into two churches (the third had a wedding in it so we couldn't go it) and then we had about three hours of Freizeit (free time) until we had to meet for supper. So I went with Jake, Kenny, and Ben and we walked all over and checked out stores and saw crazy stuff and took pictures and had a general good time. At one point Jake said, "We're literally hanging out in Germany right now!" It was really unbelievable that we were there.
We all met for supper and ate in the Bratwurst Röslein. My table was me, Cassandra, Allison, Miss Hall, Ms. Hartranft, Jake, and Ben. I got duck and this weird potato ball that was kinda sticky/spongy and I'm still not sure how I felt about it - most of us Americans call is "potato jelly" - but my duck was really good. :)
Afterwards, Cassandra, Allison, Jake, Kenny and I went and got ice cream. (I don't know why; we were freezing cold the whole time we were sitting there, even in sweatshirts.) I chose something that sounded like it would taste good, and it did, but I still have no idea what it was actually supposed to be. They have a lot of ice cream flavors that we just do not have in America.
Then us girls went up to "our castle" and got our key and our stuff and went into our rooms. Our room was so awesome, and then we opened up the window...and remember, no screens in Germany...the view was fantastic! To quote Allison again, we were all like, "This isn't real!" So I sat up in the window (it made a very nice seat) to write in my journal. I also got to watch the sun set over Nürnberg. It was a pretty fantastic day!
