Germany 2015 - June 27

Saturday was München (Munich) day!  My host parents drove Elli and I to the Mühldorf train station and soon the rest of our "group" for most of our day arrived when their trains from other towns arrived.  Our group (with a few additions and subtractions later) was me and Elli, Nici and Cassandra, Ethan and Maxi, Kenny and David, and Eric (his host was sick).  Poor Eric sat by himself while the rest of us were in the group seats of fours.  And, an odd part of this excursion was that, for some reason that I either don't remember or never really knew, all of the Americans in our group called me "mom" throughout the whole day.  Granted, I was the oldest of all of us there, including the Germans, but really?  Oh well.

Throughout our day in München we went on the subway about four times and the rest of the time we walked and walked and walked...but it was fun.  And of course, always more stairs.  What else?  First we walked a bit through the city and got to a park which we walked through (at an increasingly fast pace), and back out to the city and it turned out that we just walked in a giant circle.  Eventually we were basically running - to somewhere - but none of us Americans knew what was going on and why we were in such a hurry!  But finally we knew: We had to catch the Rathaus Glockenspiel!  In the Marienplatz of  München there is the Neues Rathaus (new courthouse, although it's still very old and ornate and beautiful), which has little steeple-like thing with figures that move and music is played, and we just so managed to catch it at 11:00.  It was pretty cool.  Then we went up the tower Frau told us about, the alter Peter (of course, LOTS more steps, very narrow and crowded...all the way up 56 m!).  It was worth the view though.  Oh, and by this time we can accumulated Nate and Julian as well, and every so often throughout München we ran into Ben and Johannes.  But yeah, the view from the tower was amazing.  I was sad, though, that there was scaffolding by the Frauenkirche, because I really wanted to see it.  Also, we met another American at the top of the tower who asked where we're from because apparently he's from near Philly and he said he "heard the accents" from us talking...apparently we have accents?  I didn't think any of us sounded particularly PA Dutch, but whatever!

Once we were down from the tower, our hosts asked us if we wanted to eat at KFC or the Hofbräuhaus.  Not much of a contest there, so we were off to the Hofbräuhaus!  Once we finally found empty tables for us, we got food.  I got Leberkäse with Kartoffelsalat (potato salad, SO much better than what we call potato salad here!).  We were seated across from the kitchen area, and the employees dropped and literally shattered a plate.  It was really crowded in there and the band was playing.  The floor was sticky because of all the beer that gets spilled on it while the waiters carry the drinks to the people.  Thankfully, our area was a little calmer.  Carl and Lea joined us then, because the other group of Germans/Americans had taken a later train to München.  Well, now I can say I was in the Hofbräuhaus! (Hint: look up this song: Hofbräuhaus Lied)

It started to rain a little bit then, so we went to the really big mall and split up to look at different things for 45 minutes.  then we went to the Olympic Park - from when the 1972 Olympics were held in München.  That was pretty cool.  Also, there was a pretty lake/little park area there, where we hung out for a while and took a group photo.  Oh, and on the way there we went past BMW World and Museum.  Then we headed back to the train station and once totally jaywalked.  (But hey, Maxi was our very fast-walking guide, and we had to keep up with him!)  On the train we met up with basically everyone else going home, too.

Since the train station is in Mühldorf and there was a summer fest going on there, Elli took me there after we arrived and everyone else left.  Lots of drinking and music, since it's a German fest! We saw a lot of her friends (so I met some more people) and we hung out with them.  For supper I had Currywurst (a kind of sausage) and french fries.  Then (after hearing a music group singing an American country song, which was the one and only country I ever heard in Germany) we saw Frau and Miss Hall!  So we talked to them for a little and she said she saw Nate earlier.  So we started walking again and then we found Nate and Julian.  So then we all sat down together.  Later it started raining, and we left soon after.  Another busy but super fun day!

California 2018: Open Heavens and San Francisco

Seven years of waiting. Seven years...and I finally was on my way to California. More specifically, I was finally going out to a Bethel conference in Redding, CA, by way of San Francisco. Along with my friend Miranda, we were ready for our short four-day adventure October 3-6. I couldn't believe that I could get to Guatemala faster then I could California. Seriously, what is up with that? (At least the way home was a 1/2 hour shorter than the US-Guate flight.) We arrived at San Francisco airport, got our rental car (a much fancier one than either of us owns ourselves), and set the GPS for La Quinta Inn and Suites, Redding, and started driving. The landscape along the highway fascinated me. Such dry, golden-brown hills with dark green trees that stood out like little black dots from a distance and looked out of place up close. When we got to a stretch of very flat land for a good hundred miles at least, varying between dusty dry grass and some sort of tree farms (were they al...

Guatemala 2018: Dirt Roads and 200 Cheeseburgers

It was a flawless blue-sky day as we drove out to Yalu once again, over two very bad dirt roads as we got closer to the village. Back at the school there for the third year, seeing the walls that we painted two different shades of blue two years ago, the youth did their skit once again. The kids really enjoyed doing Allelu Allelu with us, especially when they realized they should be trying to out-sing (yell!) the other half when it was their turn! Then, we played a crazy game of Sharks and Minnows with hundreds of excited children!! It was a crazy wave of little Guatemalans swarming us Americans. The kids watching the skit To shorten a long story, we had gotten a very late start in the morning and didn't have time to actually do physical labor for them, but we did see the location of where we at least left the supplies we had brought to build a chicken coop. It was a tiny little area where a family lives up along a hillside. It was the wife's idea to raise chic...
