Germany 2015 - June 27

Saturday was München (Munich) day!  My host parents drove Elli and I to the Mühldorf train station and soon the rest of our "group" for most of our day arrived when their trains from other towns arrived.  Our group (with a few additions and subtractions later) was me and Elli, Nici and Cassandra, Ethan and Maxi, Kenny and David, and Eric (his host was sick).  Poor Eric sat by himself while the rest of us were in the group seats of fours.  And, an odd part of this excursion was that, for some reason that I either don't remember or never really knew, all of the Americans in our group called me "mom" throughout the whole day.  Granted, I was the oldest of all of us there, including the Germans, but really?  Oh well.

Throughout our day in München we went on the subway about four times and the rest of the time we walked and walked and walked...but it was fun.  And of course, always more stairs.  What else?  First we walked a bit through the city and got to a park which we walked through (at an increasingly fast pace), and back out to the city and it turned out that we just walked in a giant circle.  Eventually we were basically running - to somewhere - but none of us Americans knew what was going on and why we were in such a hurry!  But finally we knew: We had to catch the Rathaus Glockenspiel!  In the Marienplatz of  München there is the Neues Rathaus (new courthouse, although it's still very old and ornate and beautiful), which has little steeple-like thing with figures that move and music is played, and we just so managed to catch it at 11:00.  It was pretty cool.  Then we went up the tower Frau told us about, the alter Peter (of course, LOTS more steps, very narrow and crowded...all the way up 56 m!).  It was worth the view though.  Oh, and by this time we can accumulated Nate and Julian as well, and every so often throughout München we ran into Ben and Johannes.  But yeah, the view from the tower was amazing.  I was sad, though, that there was scaffolding by the Frauenkirche, because I really wanted to see it.  Also, we met another American at the top of the tower who asked where we're from because apparently he's from near Philly and he said he "heard the accents" from us talking...apparently we have accents?  I didn't think any of us sounded particularly PA Dutch, but whatever!

Once we were down from the tower, our hosts asked us if we wanted to eat at KFC or the Hofbräuhaus.  Not much of a contest there, so we were off to the Hofbräuhaus!  Once we finally found empty tables for us, we got food.  I got Leberkäse with Kartoffelsalat (potato salad, SO much better than what we call potato salad here!).  We were seated across from the kitchen area, and the employees dropped and literally shattered a plate.  It was really crowded in there and the band was playing.  The floor was sticky because of all the beer that gets spilled on it while the waiters carry the drinks to the people.  Thankfully, our area was a little calmer.  Carl and Lea joined us then, because the other group of Germans/Americans had taken a later train to München.  Well, now I can say I was in the Hofbräuhaus! (Hint: look up this song: Hofbräuhaus Lied)

It started to rain a little bit then, so we went to the really big mall and split up to look at different things for 45 minutes.  then we went to the Olympic Park - from when the 1972 Olympics were held in München.  That was pretty cool.  Also, there was a pretty lake/little park area there, where we hung out for a while and took a group photo.  Oh, and on the way there we went past BMW World and Museum.  Then we headed back to the train station and once totally jaywalked.  (But hey, Maxi was our very fast-walking guide, and we had to keep up with him!)  On the train we met up with basically everyone else going home, too.

Since the train station is in Mühldorf and there was a summer fest going on there, Elli took me there after we arrived and everyone else left.  Lots of drinking and music, since it's a German fest! We saw a lot of her friends (so I met some more people) and we hung out with them.  For supper I had Currywurst (a kind of sausage) and french fries.  Then (after hearing a music group singing an American country song, which was the one and only country I ever heard in Germany) we saw Frau and Miss Hall!  So we talked to them for a little and she said she saw Nate earlier.  So we started walking again and then we found Nate and Julian.  So then we all sat down together.  Later it started raining, and we left soon after.  Another busy but super fun day!

Thailand 2017: Falling in Love with ZOE

A place where broken children become whole through the love of Jesus and lonely children become part of a family. Where hope is restored and hurts healed. Where a new chance at life blooms. Where laughter echoes through open air hallways and smiles grow. It's a beautiful place of beautiful people, and it's a place that I fell in love with. It's ZOE International.  PC: ZOE From stepping onto the plane August 15 to stepping off on August 27, I went on a short term mission trip to Thailand through ZOE International. When I left for the trip, I had no idea what to expect, and all I really knew about ZOE was that they work to prevent child trafficking, rescue children, and help them through the restoration process. I had heard about it through one of their missionary couples who spoke twice at the church I started attending a couple of years ago.  I was not prepared for all that ZOE is: children so happy, loved and at home that you would never know their past; am

Durham 2020: Visiting Jaden

It was to be a cold weekend in Pennsylvania, with snow forecast for Saturday. Thankfully, I was going to North Carolina. That meant waking up very, very  early in the morning Friday, January 17 in order to make my 6 AM flight from Philadelphia airport. It was also my first time traveling solo, my first time traveling in a season besides summer, and my first time having already checked in online for my flight. Travel Tip: Check in online! Whether you print out your ticket or have it on your phone, it cuts out a major chunk of time and streamlines your flight process by skipping the long lines at the desk. I was also using my beautiful new, blue carry-on suitcase, with 360 wheels. (The best part? I got it for free at my work banquet!). It definitely made walking through the airport smoother, especially standing in lines. Of course, it was a tiny plane, so my suitcase got gate-checked, which is pretty handy anyway. What a short flight! There was barely time for the flight attendan

Germany 2015 - June 23

Tuesday was a long day.  We met at the school at 6:45 and the seniors (the grade of kids who came over to the US through GAPP last spring) were there early getting ready for their water attack on the other students (it was when the graduating seniors had their "crazy-day").  We saw several of the Germans who had come over. The bus ride to Neuschwanstein was horrendous.  The traffic was so bad through München (Munich) that we were driving for about an extra hour, so instead of three hours, it was four.  Yuck!  I listened to music almost the entire ride there. Finally we arrived, and it started to drizzle a bit as we waited for those who needed to use the bathroom (and public bathrooms, or the "WC," in Germany almost always cost 50 cents to use), but then, thankfully, it cleared up and we didn't have any rain the rest of the day.  Then some went to wait in line for a horse and carriage to take them up to the castle, and the rest of us walked.  Cassandra and I
